Hypopigmentation treatment

Skin diseases are very bothersome. This is because they cannot be hidden or ignored and everyone keeps asking what happened, especially if they show on the face. Skin hypopigmentation is one of those conditions that cannot be hidden. It causes patches of lighter skin especially on the face and the neck that are very obvious to the eye.

Hypopigmentation is a condition that may differ greatly from one person to another. It may be acute or chronic and its causes also differ. What causes hypopigmentation in human beings? Below are some causes and treatment.

 Albinism
This is a genetic defect whereby the individual is born without the melanin producing cells. Melanin is the substance responsible for skin coloration and, therefore, its lack causes the skin to lack any pigmentation. This condition cannot be cured and only skin caring methods can be applied to prevent damage. Albinism is generally common in all populations.

Seborrhea
This is a condition whereby children get lighter skin patches especially on the face. These patches appear on areas that are prone to oily skin such as around the nose and on the chin. This condition is temporary and can be easily cured by applying topical creams.

Tinea versicolor
This is a fungal infection that causes the skin to have round patches that are lighter than the rest of the skin. It is caused by the fungus that is responsible for athletes' foot, jock itches, and ringworms in the head. Tinea versicolor can be easily cured by a dose of topically applied cream or by tablets.

Traumas to the skin
There are several causes of skin trauma such as burns or injury. When the skin is damaged, there is a temporary halt in the production of melanin. This causes the skin to lack color or to be hypopigmented. This is most obvious in people who were seriously burnt. In some cases, this condition can correct itself with time and the skin color may come back. However, in most cases it goes from hypo pigmentation to hyper pigmentation as the wound heals and this doesn't make the matters any better.

Post inflammatory hypopigmentation
After a serious skin infection or disease, the skin may present with hypopigmentation. This condition may be temporary and disappear within weeks. However, in some cases it can be somehow permanent. Infections like chicken pox, measles and smallpox may all cause hypopigmentation.

There are several ways to treat hypopigmentation:

Surgical Skin grafting
This is necessary only in cases of permanently hypopigmented skin like in serious burns and in accident injury. The skin may be permanently unable to produce melanin cells so melanin is introduced in terms of grafted skin from other parts of the body or from a donor. Skin grafting is expensive and usually traumatizing as it requires repeated surgical processes that may leave one drained and tired. Therefore, skin grafting may be turned to as a final resort when all the rest has failed.

Use of topical creams
There are several creams that can be used as treatment for hypopigmentation. These creams and ointments are available in drugstores and in pharmacies. Their use is only external and they work fairly well. Some of these creams are used to bleach the surrounding skin so that it can be evenly toned with the hypopigmented skin.

For more details about hypopigmentation creams, see also the blog post about Hypopigmentation Creams and Other Treatments.

Permanent makeup
This is not necessarily a way of treating hypo pigmentation rather; it is a way of concealing the damaged skin. This is very effective in evening out the skin color without having to use medicinal creams on the skin, some of which may have serious side effects.

Laser treatment
Although relatively expensive, laser treatment can cure skin hypopigmentation. This method is useful because not only does it cure the disease, it awakens the melanin cells to restart producing melanin, and therefore it is a permanent cure. There are no risks in laser treatment and the results are satisfactory.

Skin hypopigmentation can be very damaging on the person's self-esteem. However, with the presence of the above hypopigmentation treatment methods, she does not need to worry as treatment and recovery requires only a matter of time. Permanent cases like albinism, as well as temporary lightening of the skin, can also be dealt with very easily and you can go on to can lead a normal life.

How to treat a hyperpigmentation scar

Melanin is a substance that provides our skin with color. However, there are a number of illnesses that may cause some changes in melanin, and the result is that our skin color changes. Two things might happen here, and the first one is that your skin might have increased melanin causing your skin to darken. This condition is known as hyperpigmentation. Certain skin conditions such as fungal infection, psoriasis and eczema will have the opposite effect.

These conditions will cause a decrease in melanin causing your skin to become lighter. Some forms of hypopigmentation are incurable and this includes vitiligo, which is characterized by some smooth white patches on your skin. Vitiligo can however be treated by cosmetic surgery. Hypopigmentation can also be characterized by scars that have been left on your skin after a skin rash. For this condition the body will repair itself to treat hypopigmentation.

The first thing that you need to do even before you think of how to treat hypopigmentation is to treat the rash that is causing the condition to occur. This is because the lightening of the skin will clear itself after some time, but you can reduce the time it takes for your skin to repair itself with both natural and chemical treatment. Natural treatment includes rubbing some ginger on your skin, and this will have an effect on the condition after four to twelve weeks.

You may have acne which is clearing up and your skin is getting better by the day. But you start noticing dark brown or pink spots on the skin where the acne has cleared. You might wonder if this is scaring and what to do about this. What you have got is something called hyperpigmentation scar and it results from your inflammatory wound. This is your skin's response to the inflammation, and what happens is that you have an area that is discolored on your skin and it may range in color from pink, purple, red, brown or even black.

When you have a wound that causes your skin to become inflamed, it will trigger your skin to start producing excess melanin. Melanin is a protein in your skin that gives it color, and if it is produced in excess, it will darken and discolor the area on your skin that is wounded. This discoloration will remain even after a wound or a rash has been healed. It is common to find hyperpigmentation scars among people who suffer from acne, and it is a condition that can happen in all types of skin, although it occurs more commonly in the darker skinned people.

It is a condition that affects everyone in equal measure whether you are a man or a woman. Fortunately hyperpigmentation scars are not true scars, and it is possible for you to get rid of them. This is a great relief is you have the condition, and in fact the condition can fade away in the course of time without your intervention.

It takes about three to twenty four months for the scars to fade away and in most cases it takes even longer. The length of time that it takes for the scarring to fade with time depends on how dark the scarring is compared to the skin tone. The more pronounced the contrast in the color of your skin and the scar, the longer the scar will take to fade away. There are many treatment options that are available, and they will help to fade the scars more quickly as opposed to leaving nature to take care of them in due time.

One way in which you can get rid of a hyperpigmentation scar is though a bleaching lotion that you can buy over the counter. These creams are used to lighten the scars and they will be removed permanently after two to three months if you use them as you have been instructed. A chemical peel is another solution if you want to get rid of the condition. A dermatologist is the person who does the procedure.

The first thing that the dermatologist will do is to assess the condition of your skin, after which the dermatologist will use an acidic solution to the areas of your skin that have been affected. This acidic solution will be used to peel off the outer layer of your skin and this will remove the scar and allow a new skin to be formed in about two to three weeks.

Preventive remedy

Prevention is the best treatment for hyperpigmentation as well as hypopigmentation scars. The best way you can stay away from the trauma of appearance of hyperpigmentation marks or hyperpigmentation patches is to prevent the depletion of melanocytes and melanin. While the reduction of melanocytes, the natural sun protecting cells cause hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation is caused by depletion of melanin, the natural colorant of human skin. Therefore, some preventive remedial measures for hyperpigmentation and treatments of hypopigmentation are given below. Have a look.

Avoid direct sun

Sun is the major source that depletes the melanocytes. In absence of these protective cells the production of melanin increases causing hyperpigmentation. As for hypopigmentation the UV rays of sun cause discoloration of the melanin pigments. So, you must always use a broad spectrum sun screen lotion with higher SPF every time you step out of your home. Wear hats with wider rims to minimize direct contact of skin with strong sunrays. Wear full sleeve cotton clothes so that other parts of your body also remain protected from the UV rays of sun too.

Exfoliation of the skin

In order to remove the already pigmented spots post hyperpigmentation or discolored dead cells after hypopigmentation you can go for exfoliation of the skin. Consult a skin therapist and use a skin exfoliating product that comprises of AHA glycolic acid.  Along with the removal of the dead skin AHA will also boost the production of collagen. Follow this therapy as one of the effective hyperpigmentation remedies treat hypopigmentation and discover flawless skin once again along with firmness.

Skin lightening bleach

Bleaching the skin with skin lightening products is one of the most popular cures of hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation.  Hydroquinone, mercury iodine, glucocorticiods are some of the most preferred skin bleaching chemicals used for the treatment of hyperpigmentation scars. These are combined with skin creams and ointments in 2% to 4% concentration. There is a 6% hydroquine solution available over the counter, too:  Clinicians Complex 6 Percent Skin Bleaching Cream 2 oz. can be purchased online from Amazon.

In case of hyperpigmentation you need to apply the product tropically over the pigmented area. But in case of hypopigmentation patches the cream is generally applied on the areas excluding the hypopigmentation discoloration to achieve even skin tone. These creams give faster and better results. A note of caution for you in this context is that some of these chemical agents are banned in some countries. These chemicals cause severe side effects, as detrimental as skin cancer. You must also not combine the bleaching chemicals together as when you use this mixed byproduct it might cause serious skin damage.
